Colonies of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, strain CCUG 12837, grown on an plate with horse blood and Staphylococcus aureus, strain CCUG 4151, streaked in the form of a cross on a carpet of the target bacteria to establish the dependence of the V-factor ("satellitism"). The plate was incubated for 24 h at 37° C and photographed with lighting from below. Note the narrow zone of hemolysis around colonies that are visible under light from below. The "satellitism" is best viewed under light from above (see Fig. 57:3).
