Micromorphology: Motile rod (0.2-0.3 x 1.5-5.0 µm), which is curved to spiral shaped, and has two bipolar flagella.

About 35 species have been described within the genus Helicobacter, and this genus is most closely related to Campylobacter, Arcobacter and Sulfurospirillum. H. hepaticus is closely related to H. canis and H. bilis.
