The revised taxonomy of the mollicutes

Schematic picture of the revised taxonomy of mollicutes (mycoplasmas).

In the revised taxonomy of mollicutes, which has been introduced by a Canadian and an Israeli research group, a new order (Mycoplasmoidales) has been introduced under the class Mollicutes. The order Mycoplasmoidales has then been divided into two new families, which in turn have been divided into a total of five new genera. The new classification reflects the phylogeny of the mollicutes (natural relations) in a much better way than the old taxonomy did. However, it may seem a bit confusing with all the new names, but to make it easier for users of VetBact, we have written a new section (Taxonomy of mollicutes (mycoplasmas)) under the term list of VetBact.
